Subscribe-Widget free and usefull WordPress plugin

Important: Important: Before plugin install make sure that folders can be created by wordpress in your blog directory (root directory of the blog). Or you can create it yourself. Folders name should be: subscribe-widget; permissions: 0777.

Subscribe-Widget is a free wordpress plugin, which was designed to be used by all bloggers wishing to inform readers about specific information, in a fast and reliable way. This plug-in will create: rss2, comments rss, twitter and feedburner icons on your blog sidebar. These icons will in turn lead readers to your rss, twitter, feedburner and comments rss, accordingly, readers will then be able to find the latest news on your blog. If you want you can disable these icons one by one and only leave those which are needed. To enable the twitter and feedburner icons, one should have acounts on www.twitter.com and www.feedburner.com, as the plugin creates links to these blog accounts.

Subscribe-Widget has been dessogned to be very practical, as the blog admin allows for one to be able to choose your icons‘ width and height, allows for one to be able to write a title (which will appear above the icons), one will also be able to choose hwo to align the icons (left, center, right), as well as beign able to disable these icons one by one.

Should you be struggling to find the right icon, you can also upload one by yourself. Go to: plugins directory /wp-content/plugins/subscribe-widget/images/. New uploaded icons may vary in size, as the Subscribe-Widget plugin will resize the icon to the needed width or height, however images should be no smaller then 50×50 pixels. So, by choosing to use this plug-in, one can choose how to display your icons, as it is all up to you, the blogger.

Now you can use subscribe icons anywhere on the theme. Only thing is, you should use this code :

<?php if( function_exists(sw_displayOnTheTheme()) ){ sw_displayOnTheTheme(); } ?> .

Put it on the needed theme file, check the checkbox on “Show ‘Subscribe Icons’ on the theme” and it will show the images on the theme, but will disable images on the widget. In some cases, there should be some styling done on the theme, to show those images correctly; because the themes are different, and styling can’t be made for all of them.

I have installed as you suggested. but when i click edit in widget i do not see any images to select one (not even a single image). i have entered my feedburner id and checked to show it but nothing shows up in the sidebar.

  2. Axz says:

Same problem here… installed and working but no images to be selected its empty… any idea?

  3. franklin says:

same message. no image appears on sidebar just the text.

  4. Romeo says:

Same thing here.. it seems that theres a bug :)

  5. Joei says:

I installed but plugin does not allow me to choose an icon for any of the feeds. ??

  6. slafko says:

I also had the same problem. You have to change a plugin directory name (subscribe-widget instead of subscribe-plugin in /wp-content/plugins).

After that deactivate plugin and active again. Then you should have a functional subscribe plugin.

  7. admin says:

Sorry for those bugs. Like slafko said, there is problem with directory name, because wordpress have renamed it. So i made all changes to fix that bug. Now this plugins works like it should. Also i have changed directory name, where all images are saved for display so when you will upgrade this plugin to 1.0.1 version don’t forget to reactivate the plugin and resave widget from the admin panel.
    Thanks all for response.

  8. Romeo says:

Thanks a lot, now its ok :)

  9. baron says:

    Works great, thank you

  10. Puh says:

I have the same Problem, the Widget was not shown. try to change the Plugin directory name, but than the Images won’t shown. I have a look into the code and there are many many pathes to the Plugin, the half go to plugin directory with the name subscribe-plugin and the other half to subscribe-widget. I try to change all pathes wo only one directory name but this don’t work.

If there more than one man working an that plugin you should agree about a directory name and why you don’t definate the path at one place and work with the definition than with the whole path?

  11. admin says:

    To user.
there are two path, because one (subscribe-plugin) is plugin folder where are stored original images, other (subscribe-widget) is created for images that are shown in the sidebar (not admin panel) (resized images). before i uploaded to the plugin to the wordpress, all folders had the same name. wordpress changed plugin directory to subscribe-plugin, and i didn’t had chance to change other folder. will make that as soon as possible. also will define path in the config file.

  12. Axz says:

Hi there again widget rocks… but could you also add facebook into the list?

    Thanks in advance!

  13. Donadony says:

    Nice plugin, thanks you

This is a great plugin, worked straight away with no bugs. Good job.

  15. I’m still seeing the same problem of that the pictures are not showing up. I re-downloaded the version above.

  16. Zac says:

I have tried the last three versions of this plugin and nothing is showing up on my sidebar. It shows installing fine, and i can add it to the sidebar, and setup all the accounts. but when you lead the actual page there is nothing at all there. any ideas?

  17. Puh says:

Now I found the Bug, why the Plugin won’t work with any Blog on any Webspace.

The Plugin try to install a new directory the root of the Webspace, but it is not possible for anyone to install a new directory to the root of my Webspace – this would be a security issue. Don’t know why the author of the Plugin don’t use a directory inside the plugin directory ???

If the Plugin don’t work you have to install a directory named ‘subscribe-widget’ at the root of your webspace – don’t know why nobody told this before and hope the Author would change this quickly and use a directory inside the plugin-directory.

  18. Puh says:

    I change line 114 in subscribe-widget.php from
    echo '';
    to
    echo '';

(hope I can use the code tag here)

  19. Puh says:

    I change line 114 in subscribe-widget.php from
    echo ”;
    to
    echo ”;

(try using the pre tag, if this dont work than I hope the author would install here the WP-Syntax Plugin from http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-syntax/)

  20. Puh says:

Try using Unicode to post code

    echo '<div id="subscribe-widget" class="widget widget_subscribe">';

  21. admin says:

I have added wp syntax to the plugin, so you cn upgrade it.
    To Puh:
Why you suggesting to use unicode for html?

  22. Downloaded the new version. Graphics still do not show up. Is there something wrong with how you are writing the PNG files to the directory? When I try to view them, I get file not found errors.

  23. Jackie says:

hi, I just installed your widget but am having trouble getting the twitter icon to show up. What do i put in the account box http://www.twitter.com/pristinepr or just my username pristinepr? A small suggestion would be to add a small help icon next to these text boxes and show a little box with an example of what to enter.

    Jackie

  24. Yolanda says:

Is there any way you can send me the link to your previous version so that I can re-install it? I really liked it before! Thanks.

  25. admin says:

Upgrade it again. I have fixed bug. New version 1.1.3.1

    Sorry for that bug

  26. Zac says:

haha, i had the same question, thanks for noticing so quickly and patching the bugs! How do i tell WP to look for plugin updates? is there a way or should i delete it and redownload it?

  27. ebeg says:

  29. Matt SF says:

Is there any way to make the images larger than 70?

  30. NPD says:

Thanks for the plugin, its seems to work ok, the rss picture appears in my right sidebar but all my other side bar items disappear….any ideas. I’m a beginner when it comes to WP blogging so maybe I’m making a silly mistake.

  31. tranMR says:

Thank you! This is a great plugin it helped me a lot. Not have to edit the code a hard anymore.

But I have a small question as to how it does in other places is not the spare. for example, in such header.php. You can give me a code type called it as plugin in sidebar-login has called me to use as the template tag: Add to your template.

I write English quite currency but nhuwngc hope you understand what I want to say. I live in Vietnam that

  32. Anton says:

    Hi kestas,

I have installed your plugin on my blog (in the sidebar as widget, but nothing is displayed (((

    What could be the reason?

    Thanks

P.S. btw, I am surprised the plugin does not ask for feed URL, as usually rss plugins do.

  33. Anton says:

I m,anaged to fix it by adding

    to appropriate files

  34. Emmanuel says:

I like the plugin, Really Nice Plugin.
I would like to include the images in a feedburner form, is there anyway I could possibly do this?

  35. admin says:

Yes there is. You can do this very easy. Just go to the plugins folder, find subscribe-plugin folder and open it. Then open folder “images” and there will be 4 folders. Open feedburner folder and add images. Its all you need to do. The best type of images is PNG, but plugin can also resize other images too.

  36. really a nice plugin. i will give it a try in my blog.

  37. Emmanuel says:

Yup, I got it all settled, really nice plugin.

  38. Romeo says:

However, I can’t get feedburner to work :(

What exactly is it I’m am supposed to insert in the field?

    My feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/ChristianEmilJohansen

    Help would be greatly appreciated.

    Christian Emil

  51. OK – Stupid me!
I had just forgotten to activate it, sorry.

    To wishes though:

    1) It would be absolutely great if all the images was on transparent background.

    2) It would be great if Facebook could be included. From other comments, I can see I’m not the only one asking for that.

Thank you once again, that plug-in is great.

  52. James says:

Most Excellent Plugin! (have a cup of coffee on me!)

Only suggestions I can see, is to add Facebook and perhaps Digg and Stumbleupon; and to be able to drag & drop the icons in the order you would like them to appear.

    Again, excellent plugin!

  53. James says:

Oooops! Forgot, LinkedIn and Facebook would be the next best two to add to the plugin. These are better than the rest for building your profile and followers.

Again, thanks for the great plugin!

  54. Fab says:

    very nice.Thanks!

  55. Greg says:

Great Plugin i just love it. It would be perfect if you could add other social networks like Facebook, Digg, YouTube. Anyway Thanks!

Of the subscribe plugs out there I like yours a lot. However when installed on my site it adds a white line between the main body and the footer. Is there a setting that I can change? Can you tell me what portion of the php file to edit? I went through but could see any particular code to edit. I’m sure it’s there.

And yes, I did uninstall it and the white line went away so it is definitely something in the plug that is cause it to happen on my theme.

    Thanks.

  58. I updated the plugin and after the update it indicates that the folder does not have 0777 as the permissions. However, I checked and it is indeed listed with permissions as 0777. Please advise. :-(

  59. What’s with the 777 permission? That strikes me as not the smartest thing to do so have gone back to the previous version.

The twitter icons seem to all have a white background, where the others have a few with transparent backgrounds. I’d love to have some Twitter icons that you can’t see the white around the edges. Also as someone else said, I’d like to be able to reorder them. Great app!
